How to Fix MMC Could not Create the Snap-in Error

MMC Could not Create the Snap-in Error is a general and most common one. MMC or Microsoft Console is an application which provides the GUI and programming framework, that will help to create, save and open a console. So that some of the tools or software consoles with administrative privileges can open and execute.

MMC was released as a part of the Windows 98 Resource Kit, but it includes and available with all the latest versions. It uses MDI in a platform that is similar to Microsoft’s Windows Explorer. MMC is also known as Tool’s host, as it serves as container or storage for the operations. It can be considered as a framework in which management tools can be operated.

Sometime the snap-in may not work properly, especially, if the registry configuration is broken and it results in failing the initialization of Snap-in. If such error occurs you will see the message as “MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in might not have been installed correctly”.

How to Fix MMC Could not Create the Snap-in Error

We will show you three possible ways to resolve this problem.

Method 1: .Net Framework

  1. Go to the Control panel. You can navigate to either by right-clicking on the windows/start button or you can also use Run menu (Windows+ S).
  2. After, that select the Program from the control panel.
  3. Now, Select the Turn Windows features on or off option that will be present under the Program and Features. 
  4. Select Microsoft.Net Framework 3.5 option. For this, you have to expand each one of the components and check the tick boxes next to the items. we doing this just to make sure that the items you need to be turned on.
  5. Once you have done with it click on OK to save changes. Then restart the computer and check if the MMC issues are fixed or not.

Method 2: To Fix the Registeries

  1. Go to the Run menu by using Windows +R keys. Type regedit in the Run window text box. Click Ok and it will navigate you to the Windows system’s built-in Registry editor.
  2. Then navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns
  3. Inside the folder named SnapIns, search for the error number specified in the CLSID.
  4. The MMC could not create the snap-in error prompt so you need to navigate to that particular error code in the directory.
  5. After navigating to the CLSID key, Right-click on the CLSID FX:{b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510} and click the Export option. Doing this will let you back up that particular registry key into a file with a .reg extension. Now right-click again on it, but this time select delete option.
  6. Finally, when the confirmation box appears, click Yes. This will delete the corrupted and malfunctioning registry key permanently. Then close the Registry Editor window and reboot the system.
